Ambassadors Newsletter
Happy 2022, Ambassadors!

Hi Ambassadors, a belated happy new year to you! We hope you’ve been having a happy and healthy start to 2022.

It’s been a while since we’ve connected, but we are working on getting back on track to deliver new content and opportunities in your inbox. As we re-emerge from the omicron surge and ease our way back into in-person events, you can expect to receive this newsletter every two months.

We’ll share more about St. Anthony’s Young Professionals Council (SAYPC) members, resources to explore current issues, our favorite businesses in the Tenderloin, ways to get involved with St. Anthony’s, and much more.

Read on to explore the revived Ambassadors Newsletter!
Recent Events: Warm Clothing Drive and All You Need is Love
In January, members of SAYPC worked in the Free Clothing Program, processing and sorting donations from the Fall/Winter Clothing Drive.
In February, we held our Valentine’s-themed event All You Need is Love in collaboration with the Spinsters of San Francisco. In addition to working in the Free Clothing Program, we created hygiene kits with fun Valentine cards and candy.
Meet the SAYPC: Lauren and Karen

Each newsletter, we’ll highlight members from SAYPC. This month, meet your Ambassadors Newsletter authors, Lauren Fendel and Karen Datangel!

Name: Lauren Fendel

Hometown: Berkeley, CA

Current neighborhood/region: Richmond District, San Francisco

Occupation: Program Manager at YouTube

Joined SAYPC: Winter 2019

Why she joined: After volunteering with St. Anthony’s in the Free Clothing Department back in 2017, I knew St. Anthony’s was special. I’ve never felt more connected to a non-profit organization, their mission, and the way they operate to serve the community. As soon as I heard there was a Young Professional group at SA, I had to get involved and have loved every minute of my 3 years on the council!

What she’s looking forward to this year: Getting back to in-person volunteering, meeting new Ambassadors, and planning the first Helpy Hour of 2022!

Name: Karen Datangel

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Current neighborhood/region: Lower Nob Hill, San Francisco

Occupation: Public Relations Assistant, San Francisco Unified School District

Joined SAYPC: October 2021

Why she joined: I’m passionate about serving underprivileged communities, spreading the word about the important work at St. Anthony’s, and surrounding myself with fellow young professionals who are equally passionate about this work.

What she’s looking forward to this year: I’m looking forward to making more real-life connections through volunteering and hopefully social events and being a bright spot in the Tenderloin community.

Tenderloin Spotlight: Son and Garden

Each newsletter, we’ll spotlight a cool business to check out in the Tenderloin, the neighborhood where St. Anthony’s provides services in San Francisco.
This month, we’re showcasing Son and Garden, a wonderland of a restaurant on Eddy and Polk with whimsical decor and dishes. Colorful flowers and neon signs surround you as you can sip a cotton candy cocktail and select from unique eats like matcha mochi pancakes or pork belly ranchero benedict. In the evening, you can enjoy a top-notch dinner for a special occasion or grab a drink from their Secret Bar and Lounge. From Monday to Friday, you can reserve tea for two. Even the packaging for to-go and delivery meals have received rave reviews! Learn more and visit them at 700 Polk St.

Resource and Reflection: Living and Working in the Tenderloin Under the Emergency Declaration

Each month, we’ll share a resource (article, book, podcast, film, etc) that is relevant to the work we do at St. Anthony’s. We invite you to learn from the perspectives in these works and reflect on them.

“Is the Tenderloin ‘healing’? This is what it’s like to live and work under an emergency declaration”

Article by Kevin Fagan and Alexandra Bordas, San Francisco Chronicle (January 31, 2022)

“The Chronicle spent two weeks in the neighborhood interviewing more than 40 residents, shop owners, aid workers and unsheltered people about what they see happening around them and what they hope is still to come. While on-the-ground reactions ranged from full-on skepticism to guarded optimism, there was one common refrain, which Greg Aherne demonstrated as he patted an ambassador’s shoulder on his way to Willow Street.

“More healing, that’s what this place needs,” Aherne sighed. “More healing.”
